Submitted Article The weekend of March 11-13 saw 28 teams participate in the 79th Annual Flin Flon Ladies Bonspiel at the Flin Flon Curling Club The weekend started off on Friday with a meet and greet in the club lounge with draws running at 5:30, 8:00 and 10:30. The next morning started off bright and early with a breakfast for the curlers. Curling games went at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m. Roz and Don Kirkham set up their third annual hoodie and bag sale in the lounge and offered their famous fudge for sale as a fundraiser for the curling club. Roz held a draw at her table for a backpack, which was won by Leigh Ann Nawrocki. After the afternoon draw, everyone took a break to enjoy the banquet catered by Menno and Debbie Giesbrecht. The curlers were joined for the evening by eight lifetime members: Iris Wiebe, Nellie Biletski, Terry Jaszan, Pat Donaldson, Ruth Roncin, Betty Fehr, Anne Henry and Babe Evans. Another three lifetime members, Geri Kostuchuk, Nellie Jebsen and Fern Kozak, were actively participating in the bonspiel. Banquet Rod Walker kicked off the banquet activities by piping in the bonspiel committee, a fantastic bonspiel tradition! Our junior curlers sang O Canada and Betty Fehr said grace. The meal was delicious and the evening was filled with draws for door prizes, penny parade prizes, raffles and team prizes. Anne Hardy was the lucky winner of the ring raffle, a beautiful twilight topaz ring. Dela Chilson drew her own ticket out of the bucket to win a whopping $333 in the 50/50. Geri Kostuchuk won the lifetime member draw and Kelly Armstrong's team from The Pas won the long-distance prize. Cindy Lee's team wasn't lucky on the ice but managed to pick up the first out prize. Greetings were brought to the curlers from Nora Fontaine, Mayor George Fontaine's wife, on behalf of the City of Flin Flon, Ald. Val Dixon from the Town of Creighton and Coun. Wanda Ginnell from the Northern Village of Denare Beach. The in motion Committee had the ladies up and moving after the banquet with some entertaining games. Curling was underway again at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Saturday. The evening continued with great dance music provided by High Noon. See 'Satur...' on pg. 10 Continued from pg. 4 Kallia Martin entertained the curlers with some awesome step dancing and was joined on the dance floor by Debbie Sinclair, with some unique moves of her own. Later that night, Bonnie Wesner's name was drawn as the winner of the loonie broom. She took home an Asham Team Canada broom along with $191. Sunday morning started off with another breakfast for the curlers, with Beatrice Bailey as the special breakfast guest. Curling games went at 9 a.m. and noon, with all four event finals played at 3 p.m. The Main Event, sponsored by Flin Flon Insurance Agency, saw the Sharon Beck team and Patty Evans team compete, with the Evans team coming out the winner. Besides winning the Main Event trophy, the Evans team will be enjoying a 30-minute scenic flight. Hardy's team was successful in their game against Donna Giest in the Second Event final, sponsored by Pharmasave. The North of 53 Consumers Co-op Third Event final was won by the Wanda Rogers team over the Sue Chrisp team. The fourth event, sponsored by HBMS had Stacy Blackmon's team coming out the winner over the Geri Kostuchuk team. This game had some extra family support for both teams as grandmother Irene Kozar was playing against her granddaughter Kim Johnson. The Lyndsay Jackson team won the hard luck prize and Kim Bryson's team took the big end prize, since they picked up two six-enders Ð both in the same game! An elimination draw went on all weekend with all the curlers' names entered in a draw for a return trip for two to Winnipeg. On Sunday afternoon, after the finals were completed, Stephanie Holmes was the only name not eliminated and she came out the winner of this great prize. Jill Wilkinson won the second trip for two to Winnipeg in a "Buy A Square" raffle. The weekend wrapped up with the curlers picking their prizes from a fantastic selection donated and purchased from local sponsors. Next year the Flin Flon Curling Club will be hosting the 80th annual Ladies' Bonspiel. Plan to be there!3/25/2011
