A mixed curling bonspiel is just around the corner with a poker-style format to determine the winner.
Teams made up of four curlers, with both sexes represented, will curl in three games apiece on Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28.
Each team will start with a card and then be given an additional card at the end of each six-end game.
The winner of each of the games will be able to either keep the cards or exchange one for another.
The mixed bonspiel is open to as many as 24 teams and 10 have already registered. Additional teams have until Wednesday, March 25 to register.
Teams submit a $100 entry fee along with their registration.
“Just come out, enjoy curling and a home-cooked meal,” said organizer Ken Tetreault.
Friday’s match-ups will finish with a light lunch while a home-cooked meal of ham, meatballs, potatoes, coleslaw, dessert and buns will be served after Saturday’s games.
The mixed bonspiel will be the area’s only poker-format bonspiel of the year.
“This is not a competitive format at all,” Tetreault said. “It’s just to get people out, to come and have fun and get a good meal.”
Registration
Tetreault hopes to see 24 teams registered but would be more than pleased with a roster of 16 teams.
The majority of the teams currently registered are from the mixed league at the Uptown Curling Club, but Tetreault says there are still plenty of seniors’ rinks and ladies rinks to come forward.
In the event a team is unable to form a mixed team, Tetreault says they won’t be turned away as long as there is a spot for them to curl.
“It’s supposed to be at least one player of the opposite sex…but we won’t turn away a team of all men or women,” he said.
Games are set to start on March 27 at 7:30 pm at the Uptown Curling Club and continue the following morning.
