Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Flin Flon's favourite summertime festival doesn't just happen overnight. It takes months of preparation, planning and fundraising. And the Flin Flon Trout Festival Committee has already got the ball rolling to get the events going. The Trout Festival already has roughly $4,000 in sponsorship from throughout the community. To successfully run the festival without going into deficit, the committee will need to raise another $20,000, said vice-president Hollee Babcock. Already holding a meat draw to help revamp the Fishing Derby, the Trout Festival Committee is planning its next big fundraiser in May. Jason Kirkness, a favourite bar musician of many Flin Flonners, will take the stage at the Trout Festival Social. Funds from the social will also go towards helping the Fishing Derby. The month-long event was removed from last year's festival but is being brought back this summer. The Fishing Derby runs for the month of June. There will be a kickoff to the derby in June as well. As in the past few years, Canada Day will be celebrated in Creighton, apart from the Trout Festival. However, leading up to Canada Day, the Trout Festival will have its annual Main Street Days. There will be a family dance as well as a Cab-or-eh! The fishing derby will come to an end. Popular Always a popular event, the Fish Fry will be back this year _ though acts are not being released at this time. During the day, the annual Beat the Chief competition will be held at the Flin Flon Fire Hall. Matching up against his firefighters, Chief Jim Petrie aims for the best time every year. Keeping it kid-friendly, the chief then leads children through a course that includes search and rescue, aiming a garden hose and crawling through tight places. The Trout Festival is keeping spirits high as the committee is looking to name, for the second year, the Spirit of the North Award winner. Nominations will be accepted for both males and females who help make their community what it is. Applications are due at the end of next month. New this year, the festival will feature a photo challenge _ in place of Flin Flon's Amazing Race. To give the festival a new look, there will be a new mascot in town. Teddy Trout will grace the streets this year standing tall and proud amongst the crowds. Be sure to watch for hi! The festival is always looking for help and can be reached at [email protected]
