Just shy of 60 students have made their way out for track and field at Creighton Community School this year. After a short season, the 58 athletes will run, jump and throw their way into NEESACs in Melfort later this month. With a wide range of students participating, coach Ryan Trumbley says he's pleased with the turnout. "I think this is the most we've ever had," he said. A number of Grade 8 students are showing an interest this year, which is a positive, says the coach. Last season, the team lost a number of students through graduation. But, this year, the majority of the athletes are in the younger grades. "It's a rebuilding year," said Trumbley, "but, that's okay." For the first time, the NEESACs will be combined into one weekend. In previous years, the athletes would compete for one day and then have a week to train before competing for one more day. This year, the events have been combined into two back-to-back days. Trumbley says he isn't sure how that will go. "I think it's nicer when the (athletes) can compete and then get a week (before) competing (again)," he said. "But, it cuts down on the cost of travel and it's easier to organize." All 58 athletes are eligible to attend NEESACs, however only students from Grade 9 through to Grade 12 are able to compete in Provincials. Last year, 10 athletes competed in Provincials, this year, Trumbley hopes to take a few more. "There is a lot of potential in the lower grades," he said. "There are a lot of Grade 8 (athletes) who are...doing well." NEESACs will take place from May 25-26 in Melfort this year and the Provincials will be in Moose Jaw from June 5-6. Creighton Community School will also host their annual Track and Field Day on May 28.
