May has been declared as Northern Physical Activity Month in Saskatchewan by the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District. The Town of Creighton is one of nearly 40 communities planning activities for residents for the month. Last year alone, 15,536 people participated in a variety of events across the province. This year, for Creighton, it's going to be all new events. While the Treasure Walk and the obstacle course have been popular in the past, Creighton Recreation Director Channa Senyk says this year is about change. Those participating will be encouraged to try, or perfect their skills in, Zumba as well as kite-building and a noon-hour sock hop. If that's not enough for the children, there will also be a circuit of activities like skipping to help get them get active. A new program in Saskatchewan, 30, 30, 30, has been designed to help get children active throughout the day. Children are to do 30 minutes of activity at home, school and in the community. Northern Physical Activity Month, which runs all of May, will help get children their active half-hour in the community as well as in the school. The Town of Creighton is also looking at bringing in skateboard artist Telly Cameron, of Saskatoon, to open the skateboard park with its new equipment. Although a date hasn't been chosen yet, the opening is expected to be in May, to tie in with the activities.
