Kelly Carrington Staff Writer For the past eight years, friends and area residents have carried on Shayne Pearson's name through a fun hockey tournament. Over the Christmas holiday, friends, family and those passing by pick up hockey sticks and play the beloved winter game in Pearson's memory. 2012 marked the eighth Shayne Pearson Memorial Tournament as 16 teams and roughly 200 people passed through to watch and play. Each Hit picked up first place in the tournament this year, held at the Creekside bunk. Kyle McKee, an avid player in the tournament, says he became good friends with Pearson through pick-up hockey. 'I think Shayne would be thrilled,' said McKee. 'It saddens me (that) he can't play, because I know how much he would have loved to.' When the tournament started in 2005, McKee had hoped it would generate this much interest. 'I was expecting this, yes,' he wrote in an e-mail. 'I know how passionate Flin Flon people can be when it comes to supporting a good cause or helping someone in need. 'I had no doubts this would catch on.' Through the many games of bunk hockey played in the Flin Flon area, McKee and Pearson spent plenty of time together. 'That's one of the main reasons I got to know him,' McKee said. The Shayne Pearson Memorial Tournament is held over the Christmas holiday and encourages those passing by to stop and watch a game, or two.
