Starting out as a skating school in 2007, the Creighton Skating School was soon renamed to the Creighton Skating Club after meeting the regulations needed. The fast paced action continued for the club as they were awarded with the Skate Canada President's CanSkate Club Award of Merit. Receiving notification in the mail at the end of June, skating coach and president Sheri Campbell says she is proud of the club to earn that status. One of only three awards handed out each year, Creighton was nominated and then named the recipient of one of the awards due to their numbers. Starting out out around 100 skaters in the first year, the Creighton Skating Club numbers jumped to almost 165 this past season Ð one of the highest percentage jumps across Canada. The club was given their award due to the participation and involvement of the local community. Earning themselves a club status in a short period of time helped ultimately to get them this honour. "We are amongst the top clubs in Canada," says Campbell "And one of the top increase in numbers. "I'm very proud of the club, very proud," she says. "It's nice to get the recognition they deserve and (I) hope it only gets better from here on in." Adding to their numbers, Campbell says they will also be adding in a few programs for the upcoming season Ð which gets underway in October. New this year, Campbell hopes to introduce adult skating as well as a StarSkate program and synchronized skating. Also joining the team, a new coach will be added to the roster. Notification of the award was e-mailed to the members of the Creighton Skating Club from Campbell and she says she has heard a lot of positive feedback. "I'm proud of how well everyone has done," she says and encourages them to "keep up the good work."
