Kelly Carrington Staff Writer A badminton camp being held at Hapnot Collegiate this week features three of the province's top players as instructors. Badminton players, starting at age 11, are spending their days, and some at night, in the gymnasium learning new skills and refreshing their memories. They are learning from Archie Chawla, who is in his 40th year of badminton; Toby Cameron, who has won singles, doubles and mixed doubles at the junior level; and Andrew Harrison, who recently came back from the Canada Games. Dean Grove, an avid badminton player, is in charge of the camp, which is in Flin Flon for its second year. Previously, badminton players were being sent to Winnipeg for camps. At a cost that would only allow a few participants to go each year, the Manitoba Badminton Association agreed to allow Flin Flon to host their own event. 'Awesome opportunity' "It's an awesome opportunity for the kids," said Grove, noting the caliber of the instructors coming to Flin Flon. He says often, instructors like Chawla, Harrison and Cameron wouldn't even be instructing in Winnipeg. Those attending the camp, at the beginner level can expect to learn the basic idea of the game as well as basic moves. For those who are more advanced in the sport, the instructors will incorporate game strategies and skills. As well, Grove says both singles and doubles will be a part of the camp. The badminton camp began yesterday and will continue until Friday, with three time slots.
