Thompson basketball teams dominated the competition at the Zone 11 Basketball Championships, held at Hapnot Collegiate on March 5 and 6. The RD Parker Trojans from Thompson kicked off the tournament with a 62-30 win over the Hapnot Kweens. The Kings were dumped 85-35 by the Trojans. Thompson then defeated the MBCI Spartans from The Pas 98-21 on the girls side, and the boys side doubled the Spartans 102-61. The two wins guaranteed both the girls and boys teams from Thompson the Zone 11 championship banner, and the right to represent Zone 11 at the Manitoba 'AAA' Basketball Championships, that will be held right here in Flin Flon March 18-20. In the final games of the tournament, the Hapnot Girls defeated the MBCI Girls 48-44 to finish in second place. The boys played a tough match against MBCI, losing 65-63 in overtime. Mike Spencer hit two free throws at the end of regulation to tie the game 55-55, but the team from The Pas got the job done in overtime to finish in second place, leaving Hapnot in third place. Both the Kings and Kweens will represent Flin Flon as the host team at the Provincial Championships later this month.
