In case this is your first time reading this column, recently I introduced a weekly column to The Reminder where I invite all sports enthusiasts to give their opinion on the hottest topics in local, national and international sports. The panel of armchair quarterbacks made up of members of the general public has been nicknamed the Sports Experts, and once a week I turn to them for their opinion. Anyone can be a part of the panel, and I will let you know how you can get involved near the end of this week's column. Before I get going, I would like to introduce our sponsor, Visiball Golf Ball Finders. I promise you that they actually work. I will be giving away one pair of Golf Ball Finders before Christmas. To have your name entered into the draw, all you have to do is join our panel of experts. Enough of the formalities, let's get down to business. Did anyone watch the Grey Cup last weekend? I got to see most of it on a 10" black-and-white TV as I was working that evening. I didn't need a wide-screen TV or a crystal ball to tell me that Toronto would win this one. B.C. coach Wally Buono has taken some criticism this week for starting Dave Dickenson at quarterback, and I have to agree with the critics on this one. How do you not start Casey Printers, the league's Most Valuable Player for crying out loud. "B.C. lost as soon as they started Dickenson. How can you not give the League's MVP the ball? It was a horrid mistake, and it should never have even been a consideration to start Dickenson." - Jeff K. On the other hand, Printers was hurt going into the Grey Cup, and his injuries may have been more serious than B.C. was letting on. "I don't think it was a mistake to start Dickenson. Printers was hurt and he has minimal playoff experience." - Jason M. The other hot topic of the week was the basketball brawl involving the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons, or rather the Detroit fans. Indiana's Ron Artest was suspended for the remainder of the season (73 games) and will lose about $5 million in pay. He feels this is too harsh. The NBA player's union said 35 games would have been appropriate, plus anger management counseling. Artest bolted into the stands after being hit by a cup thrown by a fan, touching off a brawl in which players exchanged punches with fans, who also threw drinks, popcorn, a chair and other debris at the Pacers. "Players have no reason to be marching into the stands. In the same token, if a fan jumps onto the court, they are fair game for a beating." - Jason M. That is it for this week. If you would like to join our panel of sports experts, please send an e-mail to: [email protected]. Every person who joins until December 17 will have their name entered into a draw for a free pair of Visiball Golf Ball Finders, a $40 value.
