The local sailing season is under way. Ten boats competed in two races in ideal conditions on Canada Day, and on Sunday, six boats cruised out to Silo Island for a picnic. The club is based at Denare Beach. During the season (mid-June to early September) we organize a number of races and cruises. Most of the races take place on Beaver Lake, but there are also races at Cranberry Portage in August. Cruises may include day trips to Hayes Beach, or overnight trips to Silo (Ham) Island, or to Ing Island. At present, there are about a dozen boats, ranging from the larger cruisers such as the 22-foot 'Tanzer' to small single-handers such as the 'Laser', as well as the 'Highlander', 'Buccaneer', 'Enterprise', 'Albacore', and so on. For racing, we use the 'Portsmouth Rating' system of handicapping. New members are always welcome - you don't have to have a boat - skippers of the larger boats are often on the lookout for crew. For information on club activities, call Commodore Glen Campbell at 362-2370, or skippers Buz Trevor at 362-2530 or Russell MacLellan at 362-2212.7/7/04
