Those who came to watch the Zone 13 District playdowns for the Safeway Select at the Uptown Curling Club this past weekend were treated to some great shots and many long games. The MCA (Manitoba Curling association) stated that during the playdowns there would be no buzzer. As a result some games were well over three hours. The winner of the "A" side final was the Rob Fleming team of The Pas with Onni Hyytiainen, Jeff LaCombe and Ron Ford having a great game against Willow Park's Don Holmes team, skipped by Jamie Switzer with Holmes playing third and Jim Meyers and Doug Dutcawich making up the rest. The game was tied after six ends and again after eight ends with the last rock for Holmes sliding just a fraction too far. On the "B" side, the semi-finals had Uptown's Blaine Gogal team of Jim Quinn, Rod Gourlay and Trevor Watt defeat the Fleming team from The Pas in an extra end. The Holmes foursome took on Uptown's Grant McLuckie team of Ken Tetrault, Dave Kendall and Randy Matzer and defeated them to make the final game a battle of Gogal and Holmes, with Holmes winning the game. On Sunday afternoon, the A-B final saw a rematch of Fleming and Holmes. The game went into a extra end with Fleming coming out the winner. After watching almost all the games, the general impression was that the strongest team, position to position, was the Fleming team. They curled well and should make great representatives for this district. Just A Reminder... The Seniors Bonspiel is coming up the weekend of January 27 through to 29 at Willow Park. Names must be in by January 23. Sign up sheets are at both rinks. Also, the Provincial Ladies Golden Gals will be in Flin Flon February 13 with Uptown rink hosting. There will be 16 teams playing off for this honour.
