Representatives from the Government of Manitoba, Resource Conservation Manitoba and the Fairmont Winnipeg have encouraged Manitobans to do their part to address climate change by taking part in the annual Commuter Challenge. "This is not only a fun and healthy lifestyle event, but it's a part of our overall commitment to clean air, alternate energy and a sustainable future," said Energy, Science and Technology Minister Dave Chomiak. "The Commuter Challenge invites Manitobans to find alternate transportation - alternate fuels as it were - for their daily commutes." For the sixth consecutive year, Resource Conservation Manitoba (RCM) is co-ordinating the event in Manitoba. RCM invites people to park their automobiles and use alternate forms of transportation from June 5 to 11. The Commuter Challenge is supported by the Province of Manitoba as part of a commitment to community-based trip-reduction programs in Manitoba workplaces and schools. "The Commuter Challenge is an important event that raises awareness concerning safe, convenient and friendly environments that make active transportation an option for every working person, every working day of every year," said Healthy Living Minister Theresa Oswald.Ê Last year more than 13,000 commuters from over 200 workplaces and schools walked, cycled, carpooled and took transit. This equals about 200,000 green kilometres and prevented an estimated 95 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. "We are proud to be co-ordinating the sixth annual Commuter Challenge," said Liz Dykman, president of the board of directors of Resource Conservation Manitoba. "The event sends a positive message to our community about the environmental, social and economic benefits of adopting alternatives to the single occupant vehicle." Manitobans are encouraged to sign up for the challenge at commuterchallenge.ca or by calling 204-925-3772.5/24/2005
