The time has come. By September 15, 2009, everyone who operates a motorized pleasure craft, used for recreational purposes in Canada, must carry proof of competency on board at all times. Proof of competency can take one of three forms: A Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) Proof, such as a course certificate, showing you have successfully completed a boating safety course in Canada before April 1, 1999 A completed rental boat safety checklist For most recreational boaters, proof of competency will be the Pleasure Craft Operators Card. You can obtain your card by taking a boating safety course through a Transport Canada accredited course provider and passing the exam with a minimum with 75 per cent. No matter your age or experience, taking a course will help prepare you for safe boating adventures. The course covers important safety information, such as, the rules and regulations that apply to recreational boaters, trip planning, how to share waterways, safety equipment and what to do in an emergency. The Pleasure Craft Operators Card is good for life, but remember getting the card is just the first step to a lifetime of enjoyable boating. The more knowledge you have, the safer you and your family will be on the water. Stay informed by reading Transport Canada's Safe Boating Guide.
