Swimming lessons at Denare Beach have slowed down to just eight students under the watchful and knowledgeable eye of Nicole Moberly. Last week Nicole said attendance was better with nearly 15. The problem created with having fewer students is that it combines higher level students with lower ones and that, Moberly said, makes a difference. Though it hasn't been discussed, if participation doesn't improve, the program might be cancelled. That would become a disadvantage to some kids. "They lose out on a big opportunity," she said. "It's not just kids from here coming, but other areas." The lessons are provided to give kids a safe feeling in lake water, which Nicole said is different from the pool. The good news is feedback on lessons have been good. Tyson Schanowski, Anna Kathcart, and Kaitlin Kirk have been enjoying it. The added bonus is they love to swim and they like the instruction Nicole provides. Kaitlin, who has her level six, decided to take the lessons because she wants to finish all 10 levels. Lessons take place at Denare Beach from Tuesday to Saturday. Among the things Nicole teaches are self safety, boating incidents, and basic swimming as well as risk skills around the water. "They've been going well," she said.
