Submitted Article The Flin Flon Aqua Jets (FFAJ) Swim Club is getting set to start a new season and would like to take this opportunity to let the community know about our many successes and highlights of the past year. For those who may not know, the FFAJ Swim Club is the local swim team which consists of both a pre-competitive (learn-to-swim) and a competitive program. The team is composed of both girls and boys from eight through to 17 years of age, who want to improve their overall swimming ability and to swim competitively. Competitive swimming consists of four strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. These strokes must be performed according to specific rules. Swimming with FFAJ will teach you these strokes along with other competitive swimming skills such as diving and flip turns. The swim season runs from mid-September to May for most of our swimmers. The club enjoyed many successes at swim meets throughout the past year. Both competitive and pre-competitive swimmers from FFAJ attended swim meets in The Pas, Thompson and of course our own swim meet in Flin Flon (which was a great success with a ton of prizes thanks to the generosity of local businesses). Competitive swimmers from the club also travelled to swim meets in Brandon, Saskatoon and Winnipeg. Seven FFAJ swimmers qualified for Ð and five swimmers attended Provincials in June and brought back a total of 15 medals and numerous ribbons. We also had three swimmers qualify for the Manitoba-Saskatchewan interprovincial championships in July. Regular swim practices were interspersed with fun swims (Skills & Thrills) and other club social events such as pizza/gym nights. Generosity Through the generosity of the Flin Flon Sport Legacy Fund, as well as grants from the provincial government, the club was able to purchase new equipment such as starting platforms for the pool, and new computer equipment and software. FFAJ was pleased to host a week long swim camp in August at both Denare Beach and the pool. The swim camp was a success with expert training (for both our swimmers and coaches) being provided by Swim Manitoba Executive Director Darin Muma. Nicole and Doug Mack are back this year as Head Coaches of FFAJ. They are excited about the upcoming season and are looking forward to welcoming new and returning swimmers. As the club gears up for a new season, there will be a two week free trial starting September 19th at the Flin Flon Aqua Centre. New swimmers should be able to swim one lap without assistance. For further information, please join us at one of our registration information sessions being held at the Flin Flon Aqua Centre next week.12/9/11
