It's a summer of being active for the Summer in the Parks kids. Between the planned Sports Extravaganza Week, the Talent Show Week and even Dino Week, the children won't be stopping all summer long. Corrie Betnar, program supervisor, says there are lots of activities planned for the kids this summer. The camp opened earlier this month. Compared to last year, Betnar says things are looking good. She says there are only a few spots left in a few weeks. This year's theme is all about getting active. The first week of the camp, Movin' and Groovin' Week, had the campers taking part in zumba and yoga as well as outdoor games. The next week Ð Splash Into Summer Ð has the campers taking in the local water surroundings, like Bakers Narrows. And don't forget about the kid-favoured spray pools. A trip to the Creighton Lion's Spray Pool is set for the near future for the group. Last Friday, the camp headed to Rotary Park for the afternoon to enjoy the new play structures. Other weeks coming up for Summer in the Parks will be Animal Planet, Wild West Week, the Amazing Race Week and, of course, Summer in the Parks' Got Talent. Betnar said the final day of camp will feature a talent show. But the children will also be treated to a variety of people in the community coming in to share their talents. This is Betnar's second year with the program. She recently graduated from Brandon University and has accepted a job in Dauphin to teacher Grades 2 and 3. "This is good experience for me," she said. Getting up for work is no chore for Betnar, as she says she loves her job. "I like being outdoors with the kids and having the option to go on field trips and to the beach," she said. "There are lots of things in the summer for the kids." She says working with Summer in the Parks is a great way to spend the summer. "I love going to work. I love the kids Ð they're so funny," she said. "It's a good job. "And," she added with a laugh, "you get to be a kid and do the crafts and do the games." Along with Betnar, Summer in the Parks has an assistant supervisor, Tara Abbott, and five counselors: Jennifer Kritzer, Ben Kinsley, Morgan Bryson, Caitlyn Bailey and Rhianne Rodnisky.
