Kelly Carrington Staff Writer The Power Smart Manitoba Games are chalked full of sports and activities this year as provincial athletes will try their hands at various events. Athletes can choose from basketball, baseball, sailing, soccer, swimming, beach volleyball, cycling, golf, softball and a triathlon. Phase one of the events gets started on Sunday and will carry through to Wednesday. Phase two starts Wednesday and ends on Saturday. All games and activities will take place in the Swan Valley. Nearly 4,000 athletes competed for the qualifiers in the various events, though a maximum of 250 athletes, including coaches and managers, will make up the regional teams. More than 1,600 male and female athletes are expected to compete in the 10 sports. The Manitoba Games are the largest ongoing multi-sport event in the province, according to Power Smart Manitoba Games. The Games follow the Olympic cycle as they take place every two years and alternate from winter to summer sports.
