It was a successful start for the Hapnot Kweens basketball team. After their first tournament this year, the team came home with a title.
The Kweens won the Bill McDonald Memorial Tournament, held in The Pas Dec. 9-10. Hapnot defeated the host Margaret Barbour Collegiate Spartans 53-27 in their first game, before defeating Dauphin twice, 29-25 and 40-20.
The Kweens met Thompson’s RD Parker Collegiate Trojans in the final, where the Kweens triumphed 42-36.
Creighton
The Creighton Kodiaks senior girls’ A basketball team started the season with a bang, finishing high in each of their first two tournaments.
The Kodiaks made the A side finals in tournaments held in Nipawin and Birch Hills. Creighton rolled over opponents Prince Albert St. Mary’s and Nipawin in their first tournament, held from Dec. 3-4. The Kodiaks won 64-18 and 64-28 respectively, making it to the tournament final, where they lost to Sandy Bay.
The Kodiaks followed up with another dominant showing last weekend, defeating Naicam 76-53 and Birch Hills 56-35 in their second tournament of the year. Despite the good results, the girls ran out of steam in the final again, losing to Kinistino.
Border Bash
The senior boys’ Kodiaks will officially start their season with the Border Bash tournament Dec. 16-17 in Creighton. The tournament is an annual tradition for the Kodiaks program, bringing in teams from across northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan, including the Hapnot Kings and Kweens senior varsity squads.
The tournament will start with the Kodiaks senior boys’ team facing the Frontier Collegiate Raiders from Cranberry Portage at 2:30 Friday.
