Strap on the blades and learn to skate

A new skating program will be offered this year in an effort to maintain the ice surface at the Creighton Sportex.

Creighton recreation will offer a learn-to-skate program, says Recreation director Channa Senyk.

The new program is open to all ages and will run Saturdays – another new corner the Sportex has turned.

In years past, the Sportex has remained open on Saturdays for events like hockey tournaments. But now, Senyk says the doors will stay open for the skating program as well as the opportunity for ice rentals.

The skating program is open to all ages, Senyk says, as the focus is strictly on how to skate.

“This isn’t a Power Skating program, it’s a learn-to-skate program,” she said. “It’s for those who have never had a pair of skates on before.”

Senyk guesses that the majority of the students taking the class will be between three and four years old, but assures that it is not limited to them.

“They could be 12 or 13 years old or adults,” she said. “They could be young or they could just not know how to skate.”

She says age won’t matter when it comes to the class sizes as everyone is there for the same reason.

“It’s just about learning to skate,” she reiterated.

Rentals

Having the doors open to the Sportex on Saturdays will increase the use of the facility, said Senyk.

Along with the skating program, the ice will be available to rent for birthday parties and other events.

“It will be nice to be open on Saturdays,” she said.
