A former Snow Laker is hoping to strike down competition at a national Special Olympics event.

Jeremy Stephen will join Team Manitoba for the five-pin bowling event at the upcoming Special Olympics Canada Bowling Championships. The event, set for May 4 to 10 in Charlottetown, PEI, will pit Canada’s best Special Olympics bowlers against each other.

“I was very excited,” said Kim Stephen, Jeremy’s mother and the current mayor of Snow Lake. Jeremy, who grew up in Snow Lake, now lives in Swan River.

“He’s been in Special Olympics for a very long time. He is a very good bowler, he wins almost every week in Swan River for points. He’s been bowling for quite a while,” she said.

In Swan River, Jeremy takes part in several sports and recreation activities. In the past, he has played with the Tiger Fire, a floor hockey team that has earned medals at regional and provincial Special Olympics events.

Jeremy began bowling as a child and will be one of three Manitoba bowlers heading to the competition.

“When he was able to get going, it was very exciting,” said Stephen.

Meanwhile, back in Snow Lake, Stephen hopes to hold a number of fundraisers, including a hockey pool, to help cover costs for sending Jeremy to the event.
