The Whitney Forum played host to the the STARSkate Norman Regionals this past weekend with NUMBER of skaters taking part in the event. Twenty-nine Skaters made their mark on the judges Saturday afternoon as the performed solos as well as elements, spins and a even a team event. Though Saturday was the biggest event in size, Friday night was the qualifier for the Norman Winter Games. Following Saturday's performances, the skaters who qualified were albe to register for the STARSkate Provincials Ð which take place in Selkirk in February. Attending the STARSkate Regionals were skaters, all female, from Gilliam, Thompson, The Pas and Flin Flon. And while nearly 30 were on the ice over the course of the day, Norman Skating President Edith Steeves says the numbers have dropped over the years. "We're down a little bit this year," says Steeves, who is also part of Skate Thompson. "Last year, we had 40 skaters (in Thompson)." But like anything else, Steeves says the number drop has to do with the amount of skaters registering early on. "We are down...but we have a lot at the lower level, the entry level, in all of the clubs," she says. "So, we anticipate the numbers will go up a bit for next year." As of late Saturday afternoon, nearing towards the end of the event, Steeves said things were running well. Getting the chance to shine on ice for what may only be a moment, Steeves says it has a big impact on the skaters. "It gives them that compeition experience," she said. While some of the skaters haven't even made it through the doors of a kindergarten classroom yet, she says when they are one ice Ð it's a whole different story. "The nice thing about skating is that it's an individual sport," she says. "It's difficult to some of the skaters, but there are good skates and there are bad skates." Steeves says the sport of skating has changed since she laced up her blades. "The skaters are better at younger ages Ð which is one of the things Canada has been trying to do to produce those Olympians," she said. Starting out at a young age gives the athlete a good base for the sport. Steeves says when she was 10 years old she was learning what the now four year olds were learning Ð like axles. Flin Flon was able to host the event this year. Friends and family members watched as Flin Flon Skating Club had a few skaters on the ice over the course of the day.
