In honour of Sports Day in Canada, a national celebration of sport, from grassroots to high performance levels. The City of Flin Flon is hosting a free skate, free swim and Jersey Day in Flin Flon. Sports Day in Canada is an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate the power of sport to build community, fortify our national spirit and promote healthy, active living. "We're thrilled to support Sports Day in Canada," said Recreation Director Brenda Russell. "The City of Flin Flon has a long tradition of supporting its local teams and clubs. Sport is great for our community and it something we can all get behind." Sports Day in Canada caps off a week of close to 1,000 local sporting events and activities, open houses and try-it days showcasing sport at all levels, and includes a special television broadcast on CBC. "It's an opportunity for families to participate in healthy, physical activities. If someone has never swam or skated before, they have the opportunity to go and try it and see how fun it is," said Russell. "It's always been a mandate of the Flin Flon Parks and Recreation to offer affordable recreation opportunities for citizens of all ages that are accessible to all. Flin Flon Parks and Recreation promotes the Benefits of Recreation program that emphasizes the long-term benefits of individuals participating in constructive use of their free time." The Whitney Forum and Flin Flon Aqua Centre will be put to good use for Sports Day in Canada in Flin Flon. "Both the Whitney Forum and the Aqua Centre are traditional gathering places in our community for people to partake in physical activities and socialize," said Russell. Sport, opposed to recreation, according to the Recreation Director, encourages positive lifestyles. "And it delivered the values of fair play, team work and equal participation for all," Russell said. Flin Flon Deputy Mayor Colleen McKee says she hopes to see people from the community participating in the planned activities and events for Sports Day in Canada. "I'm hoping that it will spark everyone to participate. Sport is such an integral part of our lifestyle," she said. Speaking on behalf of the City of Flin Flon, McKee says she hopes to see both children and adults participating. "It's great that Flin Flon is participating in this national event and whether it be from children to adults, sport really is an integral part of our lifestyle," said McKee. She says it's evident people are trying to incorporate physical activity into their every day lives with activities like walking and running. "People are always trying to get more active," she said. "So it's important we...do our best to participate in the planned events." Ð compiled by Kelly Carrington
