The CADAC out-patient centre, along with the Creighton Recreation department, will be putting on a Festival of Trees in Creighton. The First Annual Festival of Trees will be held at the Creighton Sportex, on the curling rink side, on Friday November 30 and Saturday, December 1. The Sportex will be transformed into a winter wonderland full or trees, wreaths, centrepieces, cakes, gingerbread houses and lights. The theme for the inaugural tree festival is Holiday Traditions. Chair of the Festival of Trees committee and executive director of CADAC Laurel Mackie says the festival is "an opportunity to create new holiday traditions around the community." Money will be raised from the festival to be donated to substance abuse awareness prevention, which will be used locally. "There are lots of worthwhile causes trying to raise funds, this is just a different way to generate some excitement and help out," she says. The public is invited to the Festival of Trees and to help contribute in more than one way. Funds will be donated to the prevention programs through a silver collection along with a silent auction of the decorated trees. Businesses are encouraged to pick out a tree, decorate it and bring it to the festival, where the public can then bid on the tree they wish to have. The community is also in charge of judging the trees, before the auction. "It's nice for the businesses and organizations because they get together over the holidays and do something for a worthwhile cause," says Mackie. Aside from the trees, silver collection and food bank donations, there will also be a site for Coats for Kids. "We will be collecting coats and blankets for kids," adds Mackie. Activities during the Festival of Trees include a breakfast with Santa, the "kick-off" Tree Lighting, Silver Bell's Tea, Christmas Craft Show, a penny parade and the silent auction just to mention a few.
