The ice is out at the Creighton Sportex in preparation for a new season. Ball hockey has taken other communities by storm and Creighton hopes to be the next. Recreation director Channa Senyk says she hopes to kick start interest with a tournament. 'We're hoping to start with a tournament and then hope kids would want to play during the summer,' Senyk said. The community has few options for organized sports throughout the entire summer, and Senyk hopes this could be one option _ once other sports wrap up. '...the ball and soccer (seasons) would be over at the end of June (and) we don't want to take away from it,' she said. The ball hockey tournament will be held May 11 at the Sportex. Three age groups will be represented _ seven-nine, 10-13, and 13-15. Each team playing will need six players, though teams will be devised through the Creighton Recreation department. Players will need their own helmets, glove, and a stick. The tournament rules will follow basic hockey rules with referees. The length of the tournament will depend on the number of players and teams registered. Best case scenario, Senyk says, there will be enough interest at the tournament to start something for the months of July and August. 'Not everyone goes to a cabin or out of town, so it's something (to do),' Senyk said.
