Some people don't like opening their mailbox because they expect to bills. The Fehr family in Flin Flon opened their box to something pleasant. Fourteen-year-old Jason has been named the top Pee Wee softball player for 2005 by the Manitoba Softball Association. "Good, really good," Jason says, modestly about the honour. "It was a good surprise." To him it's a team award, but he brings good communication skills as well as being a solid hitter and a good defensive player. "He's had good coaching, good players," says his father, Al. "Robin Springer gets credit for putting the team together." Jason played for the Flin Flon Mustangs mostly as a catcher, but also as pitcher and second baseman. Jason believes he was recognized because of his hard work and dedication. "It means a lot," he says. He started playing when he was six as his dad had him catching balls. "I was winging them at him," his father says. Jason's skills were so good when he was 11 that he played an extra two years of Pee Wee. Jason and his family will now head to Sport Manitoba's Annual Awards ceremony in Winnipeg on Nov. 26. So is he excited to be going? "Yeah," says Jason.
