Martin Luther King had a vision for African Americans living in America. Dean Grove, president of the Phantom Lake Soccer Club, has his own vision, except it's to improve soccer in the community with quality fields. Grove would like to host major tournaments with six available fields. "We need to develop fields to move forward," he stated. "Having three of six fields being regulation size would put us in a good position." Grove is also looking to see if Phantom Lake can become a regulation size field by expanding. While that number sounds like a lot, Grove said it isn't, considering there were 245 games played last year. Having several fields will help in keeping them maintained . A problem with most fields in the community is the inability to drain from rain. The built field at Centoba Park will help. "We're going to design it so it will drain well," he said. While it may be costly to make these fields in the conditions needed, the spin offs will be there Grove insists. It's hoped the field in Creighton will be ready this fall, while Centoba won't be ready until the following fall. The Phantom Lake Soccer Club is partnering up with the Town of Creighton and the City of Flin Flon to to get government grants. Fundraising will also play a factor. Grove said that registration fees are not enough to pay for the field upgrades needed. The soccer club has to pay $6,800 in fees to the province-which goes mainly to insurance purposes- as well as paying referees and maintenance costs. He figures by the fall, the area should be in a position to host tournaments. "Developing facilities is a key focus for improving play," Grove said. "It's kind of exciting for me to have first class facilities." 10/4/06
