Their is a strong desire to increase the caliber of coaching and officiating in the region and that will soon happen thanks to upcoming clinics. Flin Flon will be hosting a regional clinic for youth coaching that will take be held on May 7-8 and is run by the Manitoba Soccer Association. "It's an ongoing process to upgrade skills," said Dean Grove, president of the Phantom Lake Soccer Club. Grove stated they're trying to give coaches a chance to get certified. There will also be a youth referee clinic and mentorship program. This is slated for late April. For the mentorship program, Grove and Don Kirkham plan to go to games and give advice to the refs. "I have done clinics and reffed division five games (14 to 18-years-old), so I'm confident I can help," Grove said. "It's a chance to help older refs." For the clinics, highly skilled instructors will be available. "They bring a wealth of experience at different levels," he said. "It's a good start to the soccer season." For parents foreign to the game, an introduction will begin in late April, giving them a chance to come out with their kids and learn the basics of the sport. This will give better knowledge of the game and continues its growth. Grove said he believes it's a neat idea with the rule book. "This is a chance to get involved and if we can combine fun with skills, it's good," Grove said. If anyone has question regarding the clinics, they can contact Grove at work at 681-3415 or at home at 687-8307.
