To help celebrate Saskatchewan's 100th birthday this year, the Border Explorers Snowmobile Club is busy planning a snowmobile rally that includes both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The dates of the rally have been set for March 4, 5 and 6. Plans are in full swing according to Wayne Elliott, avid snowmobiler and active volunteer with the Border Explorers. "Locally, this rally is beginning to take hold," said Elliott. "Anyone wanting information should please call Dwayne Wenger, Cathy Daneliuk, Bob Lemcke, Ken Mansell, Warner Rink or myself." People in the area should be aware that you do not have to be a member of any association or snowmobile club to participate in the rally. However, you do have to follow the law. Snowmobiles must be registered and riders should have trail passes (which cover insurance in case of injury). Elliott stated that hotels have reported receiving calls regarding this event. He is hoping that many people will pre-register by calling Cathy Daneliuk. Registration on the weekend of the rally will take place on March 4, and those who register will receive packages that include tickets to a supper and social for Saturday night. There will be only a few single tickets made available to the general public, so if you are planning on attending any of these events, you shouldn't wait too long to get your tickets. "Against The Grain" will be the band playing at the social. There will be awards given out to the largest group who travel by snow machine, the ones who come from the furthest away, the youngest, oldest, etc. There will also be a display of restored vintage racing snowmobiles from all over the world, compliments of Art Bilous of Yorkton. A couple of pancake breakfasts will be held as well. On the Saturday during the rally there will be three types of rides Ñ one for aunts, uncles, kids and parents, a second one for more avid riders, and a third one for full advanced riders. All three rides will meet at a central spot for a wiener roast. All will be able to participate in a poker derby with lots of prizes. The Border Explorers are working hard on grooming the trails including the "work in progress" of the 250-km trail from Nipawin through to Creighton. Anyone who wants to get involved or help out in any way please contact the Border Explorers. When heading out on a snowmobile, Elliot noted that people need to use good common sense. First and foremost, tell someone where you are going and which route you will be using. Don't travel alone and make sure you do a plan check (where you can get gas, etc.).
