The people of Snow Lake came together to raise over $2,700 through the 5th Annual Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion. The funds will help make a difference in the lives of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) in the community. Since its inception in 2003, Wheels In Motion has raised more than $14,000 in Snow Lake to support important quality of life projects and fund research which will one day lead to a cure for spinal cord injury. "I would like to thank all of our volunteers, community partners and participants who have contributed to the success of this event in its first five years," said Bill Crook, Executive Director of Wheels In Motion. "The money raised in Snow Lake will have an impact on the lives of people living with spinal cord injury, as well as many others in the community with related disabilities." Event leader Roger Wiesner, co-chairs Betty Rudd and Amanda Perret, and a team of dedicated volunteers were instrumental in the growing success of Wheels In Motion. A portion of the funds raised this year will assist the construction of a vertical platform lift at the Anglican United Church to allow wheelchair access to the building which, in addition to religious services, is used for community meetings and other local programs. Over the past five years, Wheels In Motion has raised $7.6 million, supporting research initiatives and more than 700 quality of life projects across Canada. Wheels In Motion works with the SCI Solutions Alliance to identify quality of life projects in the areas of education, skill development, sports and leisure activities, equipment, awareness, peer support programs and integration into the community following a spinal cord injury. The 6th Annual Wheels In Motion will be held on Sunday, June 8th, 2008 in communities across Canada. The people of Snow Lake are invited to get involved to help organize your local event and support Rick Hansen's dream of creating communities in Canada that are accessible and inclusive for people of all abilities.
