Slo Pitch makes for fast fun

Area ball diamonds are active Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays as league finds its stride for the season

There’s nothing like sports to bring people together, and the Flin Flon/Creighton Slo Pitch League does just that.

“It’s something to keep you busy and gives you a reason to get together with people,” said league president Trevor Thompson.

An avid ball player for the majority of his life, Thompson has been running the local Slo Pitch league for years.

“I love it. I love ball. I love to travel and meet new people and ball gives me that opportunity,” he says.

League play began after the May long weekend, and will run until the end of August. There are 13 mixed teams signed up this year, in addition to separate men’s and ladies’ competitive travel teams.

Teams play Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings throughout the season, with games taking place in Centoba Park in Flin Flon as well as Creighton Park. Two cash tournaments are held each season including one that attracted 12 teams to compete in June. A second tournament is being planned for July 22 to 24, and teams from outside the league are welcome to attend.

The league will be hosting a fun, fundraising tournament August 12 and 13, where each team will play three games. Funds raised from the event are going toward improvements to the local ball park.

“We are raising money to fix up the parks including the dugouts, roof,
fences, new dirt and bases,” says Thompson.

The Slo Pitch League will be working in cooperation with the City of Flin Flon to upgrade the facility. Work is scheduled to begin this season and may carry into next year as well. Once the project in Flin Flon is complete, Thompson hopes to continue raising funds to fix up the park in Creighton as well.

Play for this season
will wrap up with the year-end tournament August 26 to 28.

“We’d really like to get lots of people out for the tournaments, as well as to join the league each season,” says Thompson.

He said ball has given him a lot of opportunities to travel to other communities and meet new people while staying in good physical condition.

The league is comprised of players ages 17 and up and Thompson sees it as a good fit for people of all ages.

“It gives people something to do and keeps them off the streets or just sitting at home alone,” he said. “Slo Pitch is a lot of fun and we want people to just come out and enjoy themselves.”
