The Subway Slammers mixed slo-pitch team competed on the national stage last weekend, earning an impressive 14th place showing out of the 36 top teams at the Nationals in Niagara Falls. "We stuck with every team we played, and we proved that we were not out of our league," commented team rep Chad Trumbley. "There were some incredible ball teams there. It was a good eye opening experience for us." Trumbley said the slo-pitch mixed championship was played under intense heat, with high humidity. He mentioned that after they had completed their final game, team members were exhausted, as they gave everything they had on the field. The Subway Slammers played their opening game on the afternoon of Friday, July 29, defeating the team from Riverton, Manitoba by a 6-0 score. On Friday evening they lost a close game, 5-3, to a team from Oshawa, Ontario. Saturday morning saw the Slammers dump a team from Timmins, Ontario, 18-8. Saturday afternoon the local squad won again, 19-10, against Langly, B.C. This ended the round robin portion of the tournament and, with a 3-1 record, the Slammers were seeded second in their playoff pool. There were four pools in their division. As the pool playoffs got underway Sunday morning, the Slammers lost 8-4 to a team from Faulkner, Manitoba. Sunday afternoon they played a team from Nelson House, Manitoba, winning 1-0. Next they lost 4-2 against a team from Norton, New Brunswick. This loss knocked them out of the double-knockout playoff format. "The games we lost were really close games," said Trumbley. "In the end, we were just a couple of bats short. But we were satisfied with how we played, especially being a first time experience for us at the Nationals. A lot of the teams had qualified before." The Subway Slammers had earned their way to the Nationals after capturing the Saskatchewan provincial crown last year. Later this month, on the weekend of August 26-28, they will be heading back to Saskatoon hoping to defend their Saskatchewan title and earning another trip to the National Championships next summer.
