The Norway/ Keskinda Centennial Ski Event celebrated Norway's 100th anniversary of independence by setting a Guinness World Record for the most people to travel on a single pair of skis. One hundred cross-country ski enthusiasts successfully traveled a distance of 100 metres on a 100-metre long pair of skis, gliding into the record books in Jacques Cartier Park during Winterlude 2005. Ingvard Havnen, Norwegian Ambassador to Canada, and Claude Larame, President of the Keskinada Loppet, led the team of 100 skiers across the finish line. This year's event breaks the previous record of 80 skiers who traveled 120 metres on an 80-metre long ski set in 2002. "Norwegians brought cross-country skiing to Canada around the time of our independence from Sweden in 1905," says Ambassador Havnen. "What better way to celebrate Norway's centennial than with a cross-country skiing event that brings Norwegians and Canadians together." Notable participants in the Centennial Ski Event included The Honourable Peter Milliken, Speaker of the House of Commons. The balance of the 100 cross-country skiers came from local ski clubs and Norwegian and Canadian ski enthusiasts.
