After completing their first year as the Creighton Skating School, the gang is coming back for another year, but under a different name. The Creighton Skating Club was sanctioned by Skate Canada, meaning they are now classified as a non-profit organization. Last yearÕs president and returning coach Sheri Parr-Campbell says being sanctioned is a benefit for the skaters as well. ÒIt gives more opportunities for competition for the kids,Ó says Parr-Campbell. The season is fast approaching for the Creighton Skating Club as they will be holding two registration dates, one in September and one in October. Last year, whether they were learning to stand on their skates or learning the basic tricks of the trade, 152 skaters were registered into the program. And Parr-Campbell figures they will have around the same number this year. ÒWe hope for that much,Ó she says. ÒBut we will probably wind up with more with brothers and sisters joining this year. ÒProvided we can get the right amount of ice time, we will be fine,Ó she says, in reference to having that large of a registered number. As last year was the first year for this particular program, Parr-Campbell says there are a couple pointers the team picked up for this coming season. ÒWe are a little more prepared this year,Ó she says. ÒWe have an executive (board) in place with eight parent volunteers. ÒWe are able to organize ice time better and there are more volunteers to communicate to parents.Ó All in all, Parr-Campbell says she is pleased with the way things went last year. ÒWe had a few kinks, but with the executive in place, they will be taken care of,Ó she says, noting that the executive board was put in place last year towards the end of the season, after the school became sanctioned. With a fairly smooth running season under their belt, the coach doesnÕt foresee too many challenges for this coming season. And new this year, the club is looking into sending athletes to small competitions, for fun. ÒThere is a fun competition for the Can Skate program, for the Carrot River region, that they hold every year. So we will see if there are any kids interested in going to that,Ó she says. Further down the line, Parr-Campbell says they will look into hosting a competition as well, but for now, the club will only be attending them. Registration for the Creighton Skating Club takes place September 4-5 and October 3-4 with a continual registration throughout the year as well.
