On January 31, Flin Flon will be hosting the Norman Regional STARSkate Championship at the Whitney Forum. Clubs from Snow Lake, Thompson, The Pas, Gillam and Flin Flon compete in the event each year, held in one of the communities on a rotating basis. The competition gets underway at 9 a.m. and runs through to 6:30 p.m, starting with the freeskate competition, which is the main event. The freeskate competition is a provincial qualifier. The top three skaters move on to the Provincial STARSkate Championships in Winnipeg, February 28 and 29 at the St. James Civic Centre. There will also be a number of other events, although they are not provincial qualifiers. Other events include the short program, skating skills, musical theatre, interpretive, spins and team events Girls (and one boy) ages 7-16 will be competing against skaters from across the region. The lone male skater from The Pas automatically qualifies for provincials, but will be skating for comment at the regional level. Skaters will have an opportunity to practice on Friday evening, with the freeskate beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The other events will commence at the conclusion of the freeskate program. At the conclusion of the program on Saturday, skaters will have an opportunity to do regional testing. Testing will resume on Sunday. "The Flin regional host committee would like to encourage the community to come out and support our local skaters, as they will have a chance to represent the north at provincials," said Kristie Tait, Norman Regional Host Committee chairperson. "It's fun to watch, and it's something to do on a Saturday afternoon in Flin Flon."
