Player of the week: Dustin MacDonald, Battlefords North Stars The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is pleased to announce Battlefords goaltender Dustin MacDonald as the Midwest Sportswear Ltd. Player of the Week for the period ending October 24th. MacDonald started the week with a trade from the Notre Dame Hounds to the North Stars. With Notre Dame, MacDonald had played a period and a half all season. He, quickly, made up for lost time as he stopped 27 shots in a 4-1 win over Weyburn on Friday night. He backed that up with a 24 save shutout over the Estevan Bruins one night later. On Sunday, MacDonald sent a message to his former team with 37 saves in a 1-1 tie against the Hounds. All three games came on the road and it has propelled the Stars back into the mix in the Itech Conference. MacDonald beats out Yorkton forward Chris Korchinski for the award. Other players worth noting were Estevan's Pat McGillicky, Melfort's Devin Moore, and Battlefords' Riley Lang. Defenceman of the week: Steven Leslie, Nipawin Hawks The SJHL Defenseman of the Week is Steven Leslie of the Nipawin Hawks. The Hawks had to play three games this week without 20-year-old Kyle Nichols, who was suspended. Leslie was one of the players who picked up some of the slack. Leslie had one goal and two assists in the three games and now has eight points in 17 games as the 18-year-old from Lampman works his way through his rookie season in the SJHL. Leslie had one assist in a 3-2 loss to Humboldt on Wednesday. Saturday, he had a powerplay goal and a powerplay assist in the first period of a 4-1 decision over the La Ronge Ice Wolves. Other players that deserve mention when considering the winner are Perry Faul from Yorkton, Battlefords' Jared Mohr, and Kindersley stalwart Gio Flamminio, who has already taken this honor twice. Forward of the week: Chris Korchinski, Yorkton Terriers The SJHL Forward of the Week is 19-year-old Chris Korchinski of the Yorkton Terriers. Korchinski was a bright spot with one goal and one assist as the Terriers lost 7-3 to the Notre Dame Hounds on Friday night. He led Yorkton with three goals and one assist one night later in an 8-0 win over the Flin Flon Bombers. Korchinski, a native of Rama, has 22 points in 13 games this season. Honorable mention for this award goes to Melville's Bear Trapp, who had four points in three games and has been, arguably, the most consistent player in the SJHL all season. McGillicky, Moore, and Lang were also on the short list.
