The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League held its Annual General Meeting over the weekend in Nipawin. President Laury Ryan says, "The AGM is a weekend where we, as a league, congratulated each member teams' achievements on and off the ice. Our teams are reporting financial health as we've produced impressive on-ice results and national recognition with our game. "We have significantly increased the exposure for our athletes through SJHL, Hockey Canada, and CJHL events. We have two new state-of-the-art facilities coming into the fold in Estevan and Melville. "The best is yet to come as the Board of Governors have implemented an aggressive plan to ensure the SJHL continues to be the best Junior 'A' League in Canada." The following are highlights for 2009-10: Start Date - Camps Open August 28, 2009 Exhibition Games Ð August 30 Ð September 16, 2009 Regular Season Starts September 18, 2009 Home and home series for opening regular season weekend is planned. Melville Ð Estevan Weyburn Ð Yorkton Flin Flon - Melfort Kindersley Ð Battlefords Notre Dame Ð Humboldt La Ronge - Nipawin Regular season shall be a 58 game schedule. (28 home 28 away two Showcase). Bauer vs Sherwood Teams double home and home (24), Rival Games (8), Balance of Division (6). WJAC Training Camp September 27-30 World Junior A Challenge November 1-8, 2009 Ð Summerside PEI Showcase Tournament Option Ð hosted by BattlefordsÉNovember 26, 27, 28 and 29, 2009 - The Two Showcase games shall have points at stake. CJHL Prospects Game Ð December 6-10, 2009 Christmas Break Dec. 20 to 30 2009 SJHL All Star Game Ð Thursday January 14, 2010 Ð TBA Regular Season Ends February 23, 2010 Playoffs Playoffs begin February 26, 2010 Ð Same format as 2008-09 SJHL Celebrates their member teams achievements As a league it is important to celebrate our success and acknowledge excellence amongst our members. We have had unprecedented success on and off the ice. 28 ANAVET Cups 17 National Championships Finals 9 National Championships 7 appearances in RBC Championship Game over the last 9 years 3 National RBC Championships over the last 7 Years For the 2008-09 season, the following teams receive championship bannersÉ. Sherwood Pennant Ð Weyburn Red Wings Sherwood Championship Ð Melville Millionaires Itech Pennant Ð Humboldt Broncos Itech Championship Ð Humboldt Broncos Credit Union Cup Ð Humboldt Broncos ANAVET Championship Ð Humboldt Broncos There has been a significant increase in scholarship opportunities with in excess of 35 Student Ð Athletes gaining post-secondary opportunities. Significant player and coach development opportunities that can be best highlighted by Jaden Schwartz selection to the WJAC Team Canada West, CJHL Top Prospects Game, Hockey Canada under 17 Team West, SJHL All Star Game and most recently being named to the National Men's Junior Team Development Camp slated for August 1-4 in Calgary for the Under-18 team. Of the forty players selected, Schwartz is the only non-major junior based player to be chosen. Congratulations to Dwight McMillan Ð WJAC Team West Assistant Coach 2008 and the recent selection of Larry Wintoneak to the position of WJAC Team West Assistant Coach 2009. The SJHL also recognizes the selection of Jamie Fiesel as Assistant Coach Team West Under 17 in 2008 and the selection of Edie Zawatsky to the position head coach for Team Sask under 16 team. SJHL has adopted the following rules to mirror the professional game: NHL Face-off rule for Penalty Situations NHL Coincidental Penalty Rule NHL Ð No change on Icing Rule SJHL moves forward with the 4 Man Officiating system and has committed to using this system for a minimum of 20 per cent ( approximately 60 games) in the 2009-10 Regular Season. The SJHL will be expanding the League Office with the creation of a full time position Ð Director of Business Development. The creation of this position reflects the increased demand, workload and opportunities for league partnerships. The SJHL endorsed the NHL partnership and looks forward to working with Hockey Canada and the CJHL to ensure successful implementation of the partnership.
