The SJHL playoffs got underway on Friday with three games on the schedule. In the ITECH Conference elimination series, Melfort surprised Nipawin 3-2 to take an early lead in the best of seven series. Chad Richardson, Jeff Hajner and Ryan Sawka scored for the Mustangs, while Kyle Krunick and TJ Sutter replied for the Hawks, who out shot the Mustangs 52-17. Aaron Forer made 50 saves for the win, while Dan Bauer stopped 14 shots in the loss. The Battlefords North Stars edged the Kindersley Klippers 4-3 to win the first game of the round robin selection series. Josh Sim gave the Klippers a 1-0 lead, but four unanswered goals by the Stars was enough for the win. Jesse Matlock tied the game after one period, and goals by Shane Cusack, Riley Lang and Jordan Weibel in the second period put the Stars ahead 4-1. Cody Nunweiler added a pair of goals for the Klippers, but it wasn't enough. The Stars finished with a slight lead in shots on net with 39-37. Guillaume Miszczak picked up the win for the Stars, while the loss went to Jonathan Meyer. In the Sherwood Conference elimination series, the Weyburn Red Wing shocked the Humboldt Broncos 7-1. Jordan Stevenson gave the Wings a 1-0 lead after the first period, and Matt Fetzner quickly made it 2-0 with an early goal in the second. Jason Miller got Humboldt on the board at the halfway point of the second period, but the Wings scored four more in the second and added another in the third period. Stevenson picked up his second of the night, and singles went to Kai Magnussen, Cody Wasik, Eric Tallent and Colby Nickol. The Wings out shot the Broncos 30-16, and also scored five power play goals on ten chances. The Broncos were held to one goal on nine advantages. In Saturday's lone game, the Notre Dame Hounds needed overtime to beat the Estevan Bruins 2-1. Dominic Cote gave the Bruins the lead after the first period, and Jori Dean tied the game for the Hounds in the second. After a scoreless third period, Sean Fischer was the overtime hero with a goal at 5:45 for Notre Dame. Chance Gieni made 43 saves for the win, while Juliano Pagliero made 47 saves in the loss.2/28/2005
