SJHL players join Canada West team in 2014 World Junior A Challenge in Kindersley

SJHLers join West’s roster

Three SJHLers have earned spots on the Canada West team for the 2014 World Junior A Challenge now underway in Kindersley.

Blueliner Connor Hobbs of the Nipawin Hawks, left-winger Cody Young of the Kindersley Klippers and netminder Evan Weninger, also of the Klippers, help form the 22-man roster.

Heading into the weekend, Hobbs, 17, had played in four games for the Hawks this season, garnering zero points and four penalty minutes.

Young, 18, had collected seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points to go along with 34 penalty minutes in 30 games for the Klippers.

Weninger, also 18, had achieved a record of 18-5-1-0 for Kindersley to go along with two shutouts, a 1.97 GAA and a 0.943 save-percentage.

All three players hail from Saskatoon.

The World Junior A Challenge was scheduled to begin yesterday and will run until Dec. 20 at Kindersley’s West Central Events Centre.

Playing a key role in selecting the Canada West roster was head coach Trent Cassan, who is on loan from the SJHL’s Yorkton Terriers.

“There were no easy decisions for us coming out of selection camp,” Cassan said in a press release. “These 22 young men earned their spots on the Canada West roster. We’re excited to…continue the proud tradition Canada West has created at the World Junior A Challenge.”

The tournament’s gold medal game will be broadcast nationally on TSN on Dec. 20. Viewers are asked to check their local listings.

All preliminary round games, quarterfinals, semi-finals and the bronze medal game can be viewed live and free through FASTHockey webcasts at www.
