The Flin Flon Bombers won nine of 11 games in January, but that wasn’t the only reason for the club to celebrate.
Bombers forward Alex Smith was named SJHL Player of the Month and netminder Brenden Newton was SJHL Rookie of the Month.
Smith picked up 24 points (9G, 15A) in 11 games throughout the month. Heading into Tuesday’s action he led the SJHL in scoring with 77 points (26G, 51A) in 48 games.
Also in January, Smith, 20, accepted a scholarship to Michigan Tech.
Newton, 18, took over the reins from an injured Zac Robidoux and went 8-1. His lone loss came against the Weyburn Red Wings on the road on Jan. 23.
He had a goals-against average of 1.89 and save percentage of 0.936 to go with two shutouts.
