The Nipawin Hawks started the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League regular season with three wins in three games through September 21. Nipawin was first in the renamed ITECH Conference, which was formerly the Dodge Conference. The defending league and Anavet Cup champion Kindersley Klippers were 2-0-0. Goalie Michael Clements made 31 stops September 21 in Nipawin's 5-0 win over the previously unbeaten La Ronge Ice Wolves in La Ronge. Josh Sim led Kindersley with five assists and seven points in two games. Sim and Troy Schwab had one goal and three assists each September 17 in a 6-3 win over the Battlefords North Stars before 1,035 fans in Kindersley. The league averaged 1,005 fans per game in 11 games on the opening weekend. Patrick McGillicky scored four times and added one assist Sept. 17 in the Estevan Bruins' 8-2 win over the Melville Millionaires before 1,159 fans in Estevan. Goalie Pat Conacher had 36 saves September 21 in the Yorkton Terriers' 4-0 win in Estevan.
