The Battlefords North Stars climbed a little bit closer to the Humboldt Broncos in the race for first place in the Dodge Conference with a 6-5 win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Tuesday night. The Ice Wolves led 3-1 early in the second period, but two late goals tied the game for the North Stars after 40 minutes of play. Battleford jumped to a 6-4 lead with five minutes to play in the third period, and held on for the 6-5 win. Jeff Marshall had a pair of goals for the Ice Wolves, while Dan McIlwain, Dustin Dubas and T.J. Schneider added singles. Steve Makway and Kurt Bensmiller scored two goals each for the North Stars, while Tyson Knight and Brock Acorn also tallied. The North Stars are now only one point behind the Humboldt Broncos, with two games in hand. La Ronge remains three points behind the Flin Flon Bombers for fifth place in the Sherwood Conference, but the Bombers have two games in hand. The Bombers and Ice Wolves will meet in the final two games of the regular season. In other SJHL action, the Weyburn Red Wings dealt the Estevan Bruins' playoff hopes a serious blow with a 3-0 win. Jarod Eagles, Rick Wood and Clayton Bastura scored for Weyburn, who are now one point behind the Melville Millionaires for first place in the Sherwood Conference, but have played two more games. The Bruins are tied for fourth place in the south, but Notre Dame is only one point back with two games in hand. The Nipawin Hawks pulled out a 2-2 tie with the Melville Millionaires. Both Nipawin scores were power-play goals scored by Ryan Haggarty. Melville scored twice in the second period, getting goals from Dan Wilson and Chad Haacke. The Hawks scored two power-play goals on eight chances, while the Millionaires were successful on one of four tries.
