Following the lead of two consecutive wins to start their southern swing road series, the Flin Flon Bombers kept their games going as they earned another two points in Weyburn Friday night. Before hitting the road to start the series, head coach and GM Mike Reagan said the first two games were ones the team should be able to win Ð which they did. The weekend games, which saw the Bombers in Weyburn and then Notre Dame the following night, were going to be the two big tasks of the series. It was a split weekend for the Bombers as they won 5-3 in Weyburn but lost 5-2 to Notre Dame. Matt Weninger played between the pipes both Friday and Saturday night. He was unstoppable Ð for the most part Ð Friday night as he turned away nearly 30 shots from Weyburn. The scoring was late getting started for the Bombers as Brody Haygarth got the first marker of the night against the Red Wings when he accepted a pass from Patrick Sitko on a power play at 7:02. Ryan Fox (Mike Rey, Deven Stillar) earned the second goal at 10:52. The Red Wings weren't able to get past Weninger in the first period, but they were able to make their mark late in the second period. But it was captain Michael Young who earned the third goal of the game, with help from line mates Dominic Martel and Haygarth, at 9:03 in the second period. Scoring Weyburn's first goal was Matt McNamee at 19:49 on a power play. The Bombers and Red Wings left the ice for the second intermission with a score of 3-1 for the Maroon and White. The Bombers dominated the scoreboard in the first and second period, but the scoring was even in the third period Ð as each team scored three. Starting things off were the Red Wings with a goal at 0:27 on a power play. It took some time, but Flin Flon was able to earn their fourth goal as Young (Taylor Thiessen, Stillar) found the back of the net on a power play. Getting right back on the scoreboard, the Red Wings posted their third and final goal of the night, which was also on a power play. With just seconds left on the clock, Andrew Johnston (Thiessen) earned the team an empty net goal for the 5-3 road victory. Earning two points against the Red Wings Ð the SJHL leading team, the Bombers were ready for their last game of the road series. It wasn't until the second period of Saturday's game that the Bombers scored their first goal. Haygarth, with help from Alex Lamontagne and Rey, got the Bombers on the scoreboard making it 2-1 for the Red Wings The home team earned a pair of goals in the first period and came back in the second, following the Bomber's goal, for their third. Coming up on a power play, Kyle Ireland made it past Weninger to make it 3-1. The third period, once again, saw the Bombers score, but they were unable to keep the puck out of their own end. David Dykstra scored their second and final goal of the night with help from Johnston to start the period. But the Hounds had more in them before calling it quits. Two late period goals, one on an empty net, left the home team celebrating their two points Ð but also taking second place in the SJHL. As of Monday, the Bombers sat with 63 points as they led the Bauer Conference. The Red Wings still claimed first in the Sherwood Conference with 66 points and coming up quickly behind them, the Hounds had 64 points. The Bombers played host to the Melfort Mustangs last night.
