The Flin Flon Bombers, who currently sit second in the SJHL, placed seven players on the Bauer Conference All-Star Team as the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League named the players to suit up in its midseason classic on Monday. Leading the charge is goalie Matt Weninger, who tops the league with a 2.27-GAA and .929-SPCT. Fellow Bomber Mike Rey, who was acquired earlier this season from Nipawin, is leading the league in points with 47 through 37 games. He's also on the squad, as is Andrew Johnston, the second leading rookie scorer in the SJHL. Other Flin Flon players on the team include defensemen and Bomber captain Michael Young, as well as defenseman Taylor Thiessen. Joining the blue liners are forwards Mathieu Lecours and Brody Haygarth. The La Ronge Ice Wolves have placed five players in the game, although two of them will play for the Sherwood Conference as they were voted in prior to being acquired through trade over the Christmas Holidays. Forward Aaron DeCorby and defenseman Colton MacPherson will line up in opposite colors from new teammates Ben Findlay, Mike Alexander, and Dustin Stevenson. Rounding out the Bauer Conference will be net minder Andrew Bodnarchuk (Humboldt), defensemen Harrison Tribble (Melfort) and Kyle Cowan (Humboldt), as well as forwards Cameron Gibson (Humboldt), Deven Stillar (Melfort), Josh Daley (Battlefords), Mitch Wall (Battlefords), Matthew Spafford (Nipawin), Justin Buzzeo (Humboldt), and Todd Chinova (Melfort). For the Sherwood Conference, Weyburn's entire top line of Rhett Bly, Tyler Penny, and Brennan Wrigley were named to the squad. Goalie AJ Whiffen, forward Rod Cowie, and defensemen Andrew Perrault and Davis Brown are also on the team to give the Red Wings a conference leading seven players. Representing Notre Dame will be forwards Travis Janke, Andy Smith, and Kyle Ireland. Kindersley placed defensemen Kurt Leedahl and Steven Turner on the team, along with forwards Jordan Braid and Johnny Calkins. Goalie Devin Peters and defenseman Clark Byczynski will represent Yorkton. DeCorby and Logan Herauf will go to the All-Star Game on behalf of Melville. Chad Filteau will carry the flag of the Estevan Bruins, along with MacPherson. The SJHL All-Star Game will be played in Lanigan on Thursday, January 14 as part of the Hockey Day in Saskatchewan festivities. Action gets underway with an All-Stars Group Skills with Minor Hockey session. Opening Ceremonies are to follow and then the SJHL Skills Competition will commence. Following the skills event, there will be a 20-minute period of 4-on-4, followed by one 20-minute period of 5-on-5. All players were selected through a ballot system where SJHL coaches were asked to nominate candidates and then a ballot is produced for them to vote for players (not allowed to vote for their own) based on position (goal, left defense, right defense, left wing, right wing, and centre).
