Kelly Carrington Staff Writer After a successful weekend of basketball and broomball, seven athletes from the Creighton area have been selected to compete in a festival. Males and females between 12 and 15, from two of the five regions of northern Saskatchewan, were invited to Creighton Community School this past weekend to the Northern Sport Jamboree tryouts. Four teams _ two basketball and two broomball _ were selected to compete in a festival in La Ronge from the Neyanun and Sagastew regions. The upcoming festival will feature the two sports and clinics on volleyball and badminton, as well as more cultural activities like photography, drama, singing and hip hop. The Northern Sask Sport Culture and Recreation Festival will take place in February, in La Ronge. Locally, 10 athletes tried out for basketball and broomball and seven of them made the cut. For the girls, Taylor Kryschuk and Jasmine Hysert were selected for the broomball team. For the boys, Dean Rainville, Shawnovan Francois, Maverick Bryson, Wesley Custer and Brett Smith made it through the basketball tryout. The winter festival will feature the two sports with athletes from the five northern regions taking part. Roughly 80 athletes competed between Creighton Community School and the Creighton Sportex this past weekend. For each of the two regions present, a basketball and a broomball team were selected. Through wintery conditions roughly 80 per cent of the registered athletes were in attendance. 'I was impressed with how many of the kids came out,' said Ryan Karakochuk of Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation. 'I was really impressed with the competition, the behaviour and the respect that the kids showed,' he said. This marked the first time Creighton hosted tryouts for the festival. The Northern Sask Sport Culture and Recreation Festival runs every four years and has been around for more than two decades. La Ronge will host the 2013 festival with the next one going to an eastern location. Karakochuk says nothing has been decided yet for 2017, but it could be held in Creighton. For the 2013 festival, the seven local athletes will join their teams as well as athletes from the northern regions of the province to compete for trophies, a plaque and bragging rights. This past weekend was about more than excelling in basketball and broomball Karakochuk says there were the skill clinics 'but it was about coaching and officiating, too.' Those who were in attendance for the clinics are certified to be able to run clubs in their communities, said Karakochuk.
