Hapnot’s senior Kweens can’t seem to stop winning. The team picked up their fourth tournament victory of the season last weekend in Swan River and have not taken one L so far this season.

The Kweens put their winning streak on the line at Swan Valley Regional Secondary School (SVRSS) for a two-day tournament, running from Feb. 10-11.

In the opening round, the Kweens would play the Minegoziibe Anishinabe School Talons from Camperville and Pine Creek First Nation. That game would go handily to the Kweens, as Hapnot would defeat the Talons 75-18, heading to the semifinals.

In the semis, Hapnot would face off with Virden, who knocked out a northern Manitoba team - Cross Lake Mikisew - 78-32 in their opening round matchup. The Kweens got some revenge for their fellow northerners, beating the southern squad 61-36, getting a spot in the tournament final - where they’d face a familiar foe.

Hapnot would play The Pas’ Margaret Barbour Collegiate (MBCI) Spartans in the final in Swan River, facing them for the second time this year in a tournament final. At the start of the season, shortly before Christmas, the Kweens beat MBCI 45-40 in the final of the Bill McDonald Varsity tournament - which MBCI hosts.

With revenge on their minds, MCBI came in hoping to hand the Kweens their first loss of the season. However, Hapnot came out on top and won by even more they did in their first meeting, picking up a 64-39 victory and claiming another tournament win.

The senior Kweens have not yet lost a game this season, going 12-0 through four tournaments, claiming first place each time. The Kweens have also won three exhibition games, two against Frontier Collegiate and one against Creighton Community School. The team is currently ranked as the province’s seventh-best AA girls team, up from eighth last week.

The Kweens’ flawless streak will be defended once again this weekend, when the Kweens head to Warren for the Warren Wildcats Varsity Tournament. The Wildcats are currently listed as the province’s third-best AA team.

Senior Kings

The Hapnot senior boys’ team was also in action, going down to Dauphin and Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School (DRCSS) for the Clipper Varsity Boys’ Invitational, running Feb. 10-11.

The Kings opened their weekend with a 95-42 win over the Winnipegosis Lakers, entering the tournament semifinals against the host DRCSS Clippers. The Kings’ offence was shut down by their southern rivals, who knocked Hapnot out of title contention with a 75-56 win. Qualifying for the third-place game, the Kings would face another team from the Parkland, this time playing the SVRSS Tigers. Sadly for the Kings, SVRSS would keep Flin Flon off the podium, with the Tigers handing them an 89-76 defeat.
