The second half of Hapnot's athletics season is underway, with both wrestling and basketball in full swing. The wrestling season started one week before the Christmas break, with 25 students signed up. "The numbers are good," said coach Craig McIntosh. "We're getting 15 out to practice regularly. It's a fairly long season, and we meet twice a week." Practices are held on Monday and Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Parkdale School. Junior high wrestlers are invited to come and work out with the high school team. The first tournament will be held at McIsaac School this Saturday, with participation from the elementary, junior high and high schools. There will be matches happening on three mats, so the action never stops. Cranberry Portage will host a tournament on January 24, and Zones will be in The Pas in mid to late February. Provincials are on March 12 and 13 in Winnipeg. Hapnot will be wrestling without veteran Russell Chute, who has been one of the top grapplers in the province for the past few years. Chute has turned his focus on coaching the up and coming athletes. Hapnot will be looking to Brittany Brown to lead the team on the mats. Brown is in her senior year, and has performed well at the provincial and national level. "We have a lot of new wrestlers coming out, as well as some of the kids from last year," said McIntosh. "We're expecting a good showing this weekend." Anyone who is interested in helping out with score keeping this weekend is asked to call Craig McIntosh at Hapnot, 687-7506, or Gord Halpin at McIsaac, 687-7578. The 2003-04 basketball season will be a huge one for Hapnot Collegiate, as they will play host to the 'AAA' Basketball Provincial Championships from March 18-20. Flin Flon will be hosting four tournaments this year, starting with a junior varsity tournament on January 16 and 17. This weekend, the senior teams will in The Pas for a tournament at MBCI. The Hapnot Kings have already participated in one tournament this year over the Christmas break just outside of Edmonton. Hapnot will also be holding the Zone 11 Championships March 5 and 6, which is the Provincial qualifying tournament, and a senior basketball tournament the last weekend in February. Hapnot is also running a Hoops of Fire/Stars of Tomorrow intermural basketball league in order to encourage participation in the sport. In the near future, badminton will be starting up, and Hapnot is currently looking for students interested in forming a curling team.
