This past weekend at the Uptown Curling Rink saw many great shots and great games during the ladies' Scotties Zone playdowns. There were at least three games that went to an extra end. There were nine teams competing with five from Flin Flon, three from Thompson and one from The Pas. When the pebble had worn off, the 'A' side winner was Cripps of Thompson. Curling with Debbie Cripps were Darlene Yuskow, Colette Hykaway and Sheri Horning. They defeated the Rice rink in the 'A' side final. Curling with Lorna Rice were Kyla Reirson, Brenda MacGowan and Marsha Reeves. Sunday morning at 8 a.m., saw Cripps defeat Leifso (FF), (Karen Leifso, Darlene Quinn, Denise Davis and Marlene Gogal) and Mosiondz of The Pas defeated Rice. (Rice was down by three in the ninth end and tied it up to go an extra end, but just couldn't pull it off). Up to this point the crowd was fair, considering the caliber of play for most games. That meant that the Mosiondz rink of Lois Mosiondz, Michelle Hlady, Tara Scott and Kristen Mosiondz had to beat Cripps twice. In the first game, the game was tied at six and Cripps had a wide open take out to win the game, but her rock tracked and Mosiondz took the game. In the second game, the game was 5-4 for Mosiondz after five ends when Mosiondz cracked a five ender and Cripps just couldn't recover. In this scenario, the crowd was nil, which was really unfortunate because these gals curled really well and will be representing our area! Therefore The Pas team of Mosiondz, who lost in the finals last year, will be this year's Zone One representative for the Scotties. Congratulations to The Pas team who curled very well all weekend. They will represent our area very well! Other curling updates to mark on your calendar: - Master's Zones will be played at Willowpark February 3 and 4. Deadline for entries is January 27.
