School PAC doesn’t monkey around $30,000 playground upgrade includes climbing structures

Children will have more ways to burn off their energy as Ecole McIsaac School’s playground receives a $30,000 upgrade.

Children will have more ways to burn off their energy as Ecole McIsaac School’s playground receives a $30,000 upgrade.

The school’s Parent Advisory Council (PAC) brought in a new play structure with help from the Flin Flon School Division, Lions Club, Jason Morran Memorial Fund and grants from Community Places and Northern Neighbours Foundation.

The new play structure features plenty of opportunities for children to master their skills at climbing and on the monkey bars.

Children from the school selected the structure – called Seymour Heights – and were able to vote on the colour.

Beside the red swing set and the large multicoloured play structure stands a large silver and purple play set.

The silver support poles sparkle in the sun while the deep purple appears to change colour depending on the daylight.

Almost ready

Work to install the structure was expected to be completed Friday but would depend largely on the weather.

The structure was set up and ready for the cement pour last Thursday afternoon.

The final stage is sand to cover the top of the cement. Once the sand has been laid, the play structure will be ready for use.

However, PAC asks that children not play on the structure until the sand is in place.

Committee member Michelle Winton says things should have been ready for this past weekend, but the weather could push that date to later this week.

Installation of the new structure comes as the second of a three-phase plan. The second phase is the biggest that PAC has committed to so far.

Last year, PAC installed a new swing set as well as picnic tables to the tune of roughly $15,000. There are no set plans for the third phase.

Excited

Winton, who has two children attending McIsaac, says they are all excited about the expanding playground.

“Absolutely,” she said. “This way more kids can get to play on it at recess.”

McIsaac’s playground allows for certain grades to play on the equipment on certain days.

With the expansion of the playground offerings, more children will be able to play at a time.

Currently, the playground offers the new climbing and monkey bar structure as well as two separate swing sets with nearly a dozen swings, a large play structure with slides, a fireman’s pole, monkey bars and other pieces as well as teeter-totters and benches.
