The Weyburn Red Wings have announced 20-year-old defenseman Kirk Medernach has accepted a scholarship to the NCAA's Mercyhurst Lakers. The Lakers play in the Atlantic Hockey Conference and have two former SJHLers on their current roster in the form of junior forward Scott Reynolds (Notre Dame) and junior defenseman Preston Briggs (Weyburn). Medernach is a similar player to Briggs in that he'll bring the Lakers excellent size and physical presence along with an ability to contribute offensively if asked to do so. This year, Medernach scored two goals and 13 assists in 55 games with Weyburn.ÊHe also had 169-penalty minutes. Medernach was a key offseason addition by the Wings after he finished second in scoring for the Melfort Mustangs in 2003-04.
